How to Increase Teaching Success for Elementary School

Teachers wanting to create a more successful classroom can rely on the experience and suggestions of other individuals who work in the field as well as the people with whom they work every day. New teachers can develop their own teaching style and veteran teachers may improve and modify their teaching strategies by accessing resources that will help them teach more effectively.

Instructions

  1. Research

    • 1

Read research papers, studies and projects that provide new ideas and give tools which help you increase the success rate in your classroom. The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) provides the world's largest digital library of education literature for educators and lay people alike.

    • 2

Submit the search topic that you want to access in ERIC's search field. The search field allows you to search for articles and summaries of research regarding any aspect of education that you need.

    • 3

Open the webpages that the search results provide. The ERIC site will provide an abstract that summarizes each document.

    • 4

Cut and paste the website that the ERIC webpage lists at the end of the abstract to read the entire paper.

    Parents

    • 5

Ask parents for their feedback. Parents see and hear their children at home and can offer new insights into the children's interests, learning strategies and frustrations.

    • 6

Acquaint yourself with your students' parents and develop an open line of communication with them. Encourage parents to come to the school open house days and parent-teacher conferences. Give them your phone number or email address and encourage them to contact you with ideas, suggestions and information about their child.

    • 7

Contact each parent at least once every few weeks, either by email or phone to provide updates about the child. Listen to the parent's feedback.

    Colleagues

    • 8

Utilize the experiences of other teachers to help you mold your own successful classroom. Discuss pedagogic issues with your colleagues at teacher meetings. Utilize your lesson-planning sessions to sit with other teachers and brainstorm effective lesson plans. Suggest that your school adopt a mentoring program whereby older teachers can observe and assist younger teachers.

    • 9

Videotape a class you are teaching and ask a colleague to review it to critique your performance. Ask another teacher in your school to review your videotape and offer ideas and suggestions. Offer to reciprocate, critiquing the other teacher's classroom performance on a video if he wishes.

    • 10

Read journals providing articles that can help you improve your teaching skills. The "American Educational Research Journal" publishes articles and research that can offer fresh insights. Attend professional development conferences and events, such as those listed on the "Educators Professional Development" website.
