Use humor to catch the attention of the kids and raise their interest in a particular math topic. For example, if you are studying multiplication, say something along the lines of, "We'll never run out of math teachers because they know how to multiply." If you need to encourage your students to get better grades say, "The best math students always have a blood type of A+."
Use games to teach children math. You can use online math games or their offline classroom versions. Play a game of making change by using the least number of coins. Each kid receives $10 fake bills. They can use these bills to buy different items from your classroom store. Some kids will role-play as customers while other kids will be cashiers, giving change in the least possible amount of coins.
Let the children practice different concepts. You cannot learn math by watching others do calculations on the chalkboard. What you need is to do the exercises yourself. Accordingly, children must be encouraged to try to solve math problems on their own in the classroom and then discuss the difficulties they encounter.
Homework is essential. Do not overburden the kids with too much homework nor give so little that it has little noticeable effect on the teaching-learning process. Ideally, kids should repeat all the concepts you covered in the classroom at home.
When you are teaching elementary math concepts, pay particular attention to their applications in the real life. If you are teaching addition, for example, list areas where students will be able to use it, such as counting the cash in your pocket or calculating the amount of money you will need to pay for the groceries in your basket.
Different children have different learning styles. To accommodate different learning styles, use all the tools at your disposal. Visual representations of material, such as drawings on the chalkboard, will appeal to visual learners. Children who learn better by listening to verbal information will benefit if you read the material out loud. Use manipulatives such as measuring cups, scales, algebra tiles to help students with a kinesthetic learning style.
Reviewing the topics the students have already learned is important. Accordingly, try to review whenever you have time. Also, try to make the review of material a part of your regular classroom activities rather than an occasional exercise.
