How to Subtract a Percentage of a Total

When a sale sign or tag declares that the price has been reduced 15 or 25 percent, the percentage amount can mean a whole lot less when compared to the original amount. For example, a 75-percent price reduction from $2 million is still $500,000. To find the concrete reduction of that "one-time-only" find, the percentage must be applied and subtracted from the total to discover the true bargain.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain the total and the percentage amount. For this example, the percentage is 35 percent and the total amount is 50.

    • 2

Multiply the total and the percentage amount together. For this example, multiplying 35 by 50 equals 1,750.

    • 3

Divide the product from the previous step by 100. For this example, 1,750 divided by 100 equals 17.50.

    • 4

Subtract the quotient calculated in the last step from the total. For this example, 50 less 17.50 is 32.50.
