First Grade Fire Protection Activities

Fire prevention is a huge part of keeping children safe. There are many things children can to cause a fire they may not be aware of if they're not properly educated on the matter. A wonderful way to get fire safety into their head is to actually get them involved in activities concerning the matter. Fire prevention is a huge part of fire protection, and both should be taught at a young age--first grade is a perfect time for this.
  1. Stop, Drop and Roll

    • This is a fire protection practice, which teaches children that if they are ever caught on fire, they can protect themselves by stopping, dropping and rolling. Explain to the children that they want to roll around to put out the flames. You can also explain that smoke goes upward, and by dropping to the floor, they will be able to see and breath better. Now have the children try this themselves; it will be fun for them and educational at the same time.

    Safety Route

    • At school you can go over the fire safety route that you have in your classroom. Discuss how and why the children should have their parents help them devise a similar plan at home. Tell them to keep in mind that the shortest route out of the home will often be the best but to come up with a back up route to be extra safe. This would also be a good time to discuss other fire safety with the children such as not playing with fire.

    Outlet Safety

    • This is a fire prevention practice. Teach the children to never play with electrical outlets as they can not only harm the children with its powerful electricity, but improper usage can cause fire. Teach them to be aware of different scenarios of which could be dangerous. Bring a mock outlet into class. Show the children different usages that would be unsafe by plugging multiple cords into each other, creating a hazard. You can also tell them what to look for in the outlet as you're demonstrating this: exposed wires, smoking, sparking, burning, black outlets or funny smells.

    Firehouse Field Trip

    • A field trip to the local firehouse would be highly beneficial. This will give the children a chance to meet the people who fight fires, but the kids will also learn a ton of information about the dangers of fire. The kids can explore the truck and the fire equipment that's used during fires. They'll see just by the gear that's worn how much safety is needed for grown ups to fight fire. This should give them a good idea that fires are dangerous to everyone.
