Using Word, create a one-page letter using a 14-point, or smaller, font. Save the document. Choose the "View" tab and make sure the icon for "Print Document" is highlighted. Next, you will add a background color to your letter. To add a background color in Word 2007 or 2010, choose the "Page Layout" tab. In the middle of the tool bar you will see a section labeled "Page Background." Choose "Page Color." A chart of colors will appear. Click on one of the colors and your entire letter will change to that color. You can play with different colors by just clicking on different colors.
Add a border to your letter. Choose the "Page Layout" tab, then the "Page Background" section again. Choose the "Page Borders" icon. On the left-hand side of this box, is a "Setting" section, where you can try different border layouts for your letter. Once you have chosen the border "Setting," you will choose the "Style" of line you want the border to have, using the center column's "Style" area. You can also choose the color of the border lines using the "Color" box below the "Style" area. Click on the color you want the border lines to be and you may want to coordinate the colors with the page background color you added in the previous section. You can also choose the width of the lines and in the "Art" box you can choose artwork for the borders, such as adding a border of trees or hearts, instead of lines. On the bottom right-hand side of the "Borders" box it says, "Apply To." Make sure that box says "Full Document." Now click the OK button.
To add a watermark, click on the "Watermark" icon in the "Page Background" section. Use the arrow on the right-hand side to scroll through the choices for watermarks. You can have words such as "Confidential," "Do not copy" and "Urgent" printed lightly behind the letter as a watermark. Click the watermark you want, and it will automatically be added to your letter. If you want to add an image as a watermark instead of the words provided, click on the "Watermark" icon, then choose the "Custom Watermark" link. Choose the second bubble, for "Picture Watermark." Use the "Select Picture" button and choose your image from your computer hard drive or a flash drive. Once your image is chosen, make sure the "Scale" box says "Auto" and make sure the "Washout" button is chosen so the image will be lighter than the text on the page. Now hit the "Apply" button, then the "Close" button. You will see a faint image of the watermark on your letter. You may want to change the background color of the letter to a very light color so your watermark shows up properly. If you do not like your watermark and want to start over, just click the "Watermark" icon and choose the "Remove Watermark" link.
Change the font color and style. Click on the "Home" tab. Notice the "Font" area of the toolbar, a little left of center. Hold your cursor over the last bottom-right icon, which is a capital "A" with a colored line under it and an arrow to its right. It will say "Font Color" when you hold the cursor over the icon. Now, highlight the text in your letter. With the text still highlighted, click on the "Font Color" icon and choose a color for your font. Once you choose the color box, it will turn all the text you highlighted that color.
The "Font" area of the "Home" tab offers several options for font styling. This section allows you to choose the size and font face, and it also lets you change from uppercase to lowercase and vice versa. To change your font styles, you must first highlight the text you want to change. So, highlight the text of your letter, and choose the size of your font. Normal letter size is 12-point, so choose 12 in the size area. Choose a font style by scrolling through and trying different font styles with the box to the left of the size number box. You will see a wide variety of different writing styles, from script to stencils, and as you choose different styles, it will show you how that font looks by changing your highlighted text. Once you have chosen a font style, highlight your choice, and it will change your font. You can change your text from lowercase letters to uppercase, or from uppercase to lowercase, by highlighting the text and then clicking on the icon in the "Font" box that shows a lower and capital letter together. This will allow you to make changes to the case of the letters.
