First Grade PE Activities

Physical education class is an opportunity to teach students about safety, encourage participation, build sportsmanship and introduce new skills. Plan activities to give your first-grade students experience using a variety of equipment. Teach them a multitude of creative games to make your gym class a hit.
  1. Elvis Tag

    • Elvis Tag, named after Elvis Presley, puts a spin on the traditional game of frozen tag. Select one or more students to be "it," depending on the size of the class. These children wear pinnies to be easily identified by their classmates. When students are tagged, they stand in an Elvis-like pose with one hand on their hips and the opposite arm outstretched, pointing upwards. Students must remain in this pose until a classmate crawls through their legs. Children who become unfrozen express their gratitude by saying, "Thank you! Thank you very much!" in their best Elvis voice. Give other students the chance to be "it" after some time has passed.

    Doctor Dodgeball

    • Doctor Dodgeball is played like a traditional game of dodgeball, with the class split into two teams and each team occupying half of the gym. One student on each team is chosen to be the doctor. The doctor has a scooter board, which is used as the ambulance. Designate a small area near the back wall where each doctor sits with the ambulance. When students are hit by a ball, they must sit down on the floor. The doctors bring the ambulances to fallen teammates and wheel them back to the hospital, one at a time. The players must count to 10 before returning to the game. If doctors are hit by a ball while outside the hospital, they must sit down and cannot be rescued. The game ends when all the players on a team are sitting down.

    Cat and Mouse

    • Spread out a parachute and ask each student to hold a handle. Select one student to be the mouse. This student goes underneath the parachute and crawls on the floor. Select a second student to be the cat. This student crawls on top of the parachute. Classmates holding the handles rapidly wave the parachute up and down. The object of the game is for the cat to find the mouse. Once the mouse is tagged, the game ends and new students can be selected to assume the roles of cat and mouse.

    Scooter Board Basketball

    • Put a twist on the game of basketball by providing each student with a scooter board. Divide students into two teams. Set a small, preschool-sized basketball net at each end of the gym. Students ride on their scooter boards, passing the ball and trying to score on their opponents' net. An elephant skin ball works well. Dribbling is not required and students are encouraged to pass or shoot after holding the ball for a maximum of 10 seconds. The game ends when the desired time limit or point total is reached.
