Persuasive Writing Ideas for Second Grade

The goal of persuasive writing is to compel the reader to action or sway the reader's opinion. While the writer should employ facts to lend credibility to her position, the objective is ultimately to influence the reader to changes his thoughts or actions. As students learn about the method of persuading people via the written word, they should draw on experiences and ideas relevant to their lives.
  1. Life at Home

    • After the school bell rings, every child goes somewhere. Home usually includes parents, other family members or guardians who are authority figures in the student's life. Asking the student to imagine a scenario where he must convince that figure to let him keep a dog he found would feel relevant to many second graders.

    In the Classroom

    • By the time students enter second grade, it's likely they've already been on at least one field trip with their classmates. Each student can select a field trip destination and persuade the reader, in this case the teacher, to choose that location over those suggested by fellow students. This assignment results in a little healthy competition and, perhaps, a fun trip for the class.

    School Policy

    • At times, children feel powerless. By having students write to the school board about a policy in their district, they begin to better understand some of the rules they follow every day. If students believe their essays may actually impact a policy decision in their district, they're more likely to put serious thought into their writing. Issues particularly relevant to this age group include uniforms and year-round school.

    Peer Pressure

    • As early as second grade, students must deal with peer pressure and other negative influences. Districts seek to combat unsavory behaviors by implementing such programs as Drug Awareness Resistance Education, or D.A.R.E. By persuading a friend to not engage in dangerous activities, students can begin making behavioral decisions that will influence the rest of their lives.
