A breakfast for the sixth grade class on the last day of school begins the morning by reminding students that today is a unique, special day for all of them. Other teachers and sixth grade parents may want to help prepare, decorate and assist at the event. The location, time and number of volunteers required depends on the size of the class. Breakfast can include the parents and an awards ceremony, or be for students only and a start to a day filled with many memorable activities.
A field trip outside of the school is another way to make sixth grade students feel special on the last day of class. Going to a movie, visiting a zoo, playing baseball, having a cook-out at a local park, spending the day at the beach or a combination of these are some possible rewards for the students finishing their elementary school experience. Your selection will depend on what activities are available in your area.
Let students show off their unique talents in front of the school and parents by having a talent show. Students can perform alone or together, depending on their skills and inclination. They can sing, read a poem, perform a skit, do karate, play their instruments, read an essay they've written during the year or anything else that displays their unique skills.
An awards ceremony recognizes all the achievements students have made throughout the year. Increase students' anticipation for the event by allowing them to help prepare for it. Students can craft invitations for their parents, decorations and help assemble a scrapbook of memories or Powerpoint presentation to share at the event. Everyone has accomplished something important during the year; award students for top grades, perfect attendance, greatest academic improvement, good citizenship and other merits students and parents can be proud of.
