How to Write the Equivalent Form of a Decimal

In a number, the numerals after the decimal point show parts of a whole in tenths, hundredths, thousandths, continuing on in powers of ten. Understanding the place values of the decimal's numerals is the basis for understanding how to write the equivalent form of the decimal number. With this understanding of the value of each numeral represented, decimals are written as the equivalent fraction form, or the equivalent percent form using some basic mathematical skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Say the decimal with the proper place value. For example, to say the decimal represented by 0.44, say, " Forty-four hundredths," not, "Point forty-four." Now write the decimal you just said in fraction form, 44/100. Reduce the fraction into simplest form. Divide both the numerator and denominator by a common factor to reduce the fraction. In the case of 44/100, divide both numbers by four. The simplest form of this equivalent decimal is 11/25 in fraction form.

Multiply the decimal by 100 to change it to its equivalent percentage form. A simple way to multiply by 100 is to move the decimal point over two places to the right. Write a percentage sign - % - after the new equivalent number. In the same example as above, 0.44, turns into the equivalent percentage number of 44%. Both of these numbers represent 44 out of 100.

Adding zeros to any decimal number does not change the number's value.

Add zeros to the right of the decimal number to write another equivalent form of the decimal. Add any number of zeros, and you have not changed the value of the number. For instance, 0.44 has the same value as 0.4400000.
