Grammar Drills for Parts of Speech

Learning and understanding the parts of speech are an essential part of a child's language arts education. The parts of speech help students to construct and comprehend written and spoken language. The most basic parts of speech are verbs, nouns and adjectives. There are many more parts of speech such as pronouns, conjunctions and adverbs, to name a few.
  1. Flash Cards

    • Flash cards are easy to make and assist kids in memorizing the parts of speech. Flashcards can have the meaning of a part of speech on one side and the part of speech on the other side. Another method is having a word on one side of the card and its part of speech on the other. Students should be drilled quickly with the flash cards. Teachers can time students and have them race to answer the most correct answers. Similarly, flash card drills can be turned into a race, and students can compete against one another.

    Newspaper Search

    • Learning to identify the parts of speech is important for students. Searching through the newspaper is an effective way of testing a student's ability to identify and understand the parts of speech in writing. Depending upon the age and skill level of students, the teacher can assign groups or individuals to search for certain parts of speech in a newspaper or article. The group that properly identifies the most parts of speech receive a prize or incentive. The newspaper activity can be timed, or students may be asked to search for a certain amount.

    Jeopardy

    • Jeopardy is an interactive game that tests students ability to quickly come up with or identify the parts of speech. Potential categories can include verbs, nouns or adjectives or to name that part of speech. Jeopardy is an excellent activity for a test or quiz review. It can be played individually or in groups. To boast participation, teachers may want to assign prizes to the winners such as homework passes or extra credit points.

    Internet Activities

    • Many Internet are activities available online that offer parts of speech practice for students. Utilizing the Internet for educational purposes is good because it appeals to students' interest in technology and computers. There are many websites that offer these types of activities free of charge (see References). Different activities are available for students of all ages and skill levels. Parts of speech Internet activities are great for students during free time in class or at home.
