Games for Labeling Sentences With Parts of Speech

Practice labeling sentences with the various parts of speech if you want to understand the basic components of English grammar. This can be helpful for those taking elementary school or high school English, or adults now learning the language. Eight different parts of speech exist. These are verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, interjections and prepositions. Play simple games, computer game style games and games that ask you to label words in context to understand how to label sentences. These games are all free to play.
  1. Simple Games

    • Simple parts of speech games, such as Room 108’s Parts of Speech, teach the basic parts of speech by presenting players with a options on the screen to find the noun, adjective or verb. Play the Parts of Speech game by clicking on the word that represents the part of speech listed at the bottom of the screen in the question. For example, with the question “Which word is a noun?” displayed at the bottom of the page and the words smile, frown and ball displayed in the middle of the screen, the player should choose ball. Nouns are names of persons, places and things such as a ball.

    Computer Game Style: General

    • Many games teach the parts of speech through computer game play. Some of these games focus on different parts of speech. Other games are more specific. Word Invasion is one game that focuses on most parts of speech, and takes the rough form of the game Space Invaders. At the top of the screen, jellyfish with words written on them slowly descend on to an octopus. Players use the arrow buttons and the space bar to select which word represents the part of speech displayed on the bottom of the screen.

    Computer Game Style: Specific

    • Some computer games work on specific areas of speech such as the game Rats. Rats focuses on adjectives and adverbs, two parts of speech that have relatively similar functions. Adjectives describe nouns. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives or phrases, and generally end with ly. Rats requires players to catch adjectives and avoid adverbs or vice versa, by controlling the rat protagonist with the keyboard's arrow buttons.

    In Context

    • Other games focus on defining the part of speech within a sentence. One such game is Toon University’s Parts of Speech This is a simple game that enables learners to see how different parts of speech fit into sentences. Players look for the capitalized word in the sentence displayed at the top of the screen and then choose its part of speech from the options displayed in the center of the game screen. If the answer is correct, the character to the right of the screen will fire his plunger arrow at the target with humorous consequences.
