Bake a store-bought cake mix in a loaf pan according to package directions. Position the cooled cake onto an aluminum foil-covered cutting board. Place an unwrapped Twinkie at one short end of the cake and frost the entire cake and Twinkie with bright yellow frosting. Press chocolate sandwich cookies into the frosting as the four wheels and a vanilla sugar wafer to appear as the school bus's grill. Add chocolate cookie sticks for bumpers, white gum squares as windows, and circular mints with orange candies in the center for vehicle lights. Enjoy the school bus cake for a September birthday party or as a back-to-school treat for the class.
Perfect for preschoolers or younger elementary children, give each student a Twinkie, a plastic knife, a dollop of frosting and four circular gummy candies to create their own personal school bus snack. Instruct each child to cut a small rectangle out of one end of the Twinkie to form a hood and windshield for the bus. Spread a small bit of frosting onto the back of each gummy circle and press onto the sides of the Twinkie to form the four vehicle wheels. Older kids can frost the entire Twinkie with yellow icing before adding the wheels.
Remove a small rectangle from the end of a Twinkie with a plastic knife. Melt yellow candy wafers in a microwave-safe bowl according to package directions, and dip one Twinkie into the candy. Coat it well on all sides and ends. Lift the Twinkie from the melted candy and place on a sheet of parchment paper. Press two miniature chocolate sandwich cookies onto each side as wheels and pipe black icing as bus windows, a windshield and a bus grill. Use cinnamon candy dots for the bus lights on the front and back of the bus.
Beat 1 egg yolk, 1/2 tsp of water and food coloring until a bold color is reached. Use this recipe to create different colors of edible paint and allow children to paint their own decorations onto their unwrapped Twinkie. Be sure to use brand-new paint brushes to avoid getting any paint on their food. Place the Twinkies onto a cookie sheet and bake in a 350-degree oven for a few minutes, or until the egg yolk has solidified, but not long enough to brown the Twinkies.
