How to Write and Solve Equations With a Perimeter

Perimeter is one of the earliest concepts introduced in geometry. Defined as the distance around a polygon, perimeter is a precursor to trickier calculations such as area and volume. Setting up perimeter equations and solving them is also an early step toward introducing students to algebra.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a rectangle and label each side with its given length. Remember, because the complementary angles in a rectangle are congruent, the parallel sides have to be the same length. So, you should end up with figures like 8, 6, 8 and 6.

    • 2

      Set up the perimeter equation for a rectangle. P = 2*L + 2*W, where L = length and W = width.

    • 3

      Plug in your values for L and W. In this case, the values are 8 and 6. P = 2*8 + 2*6, or 16 + 12, or 28.
