Activities With Language Arts to Do With Insects

Various types of insects can be found throughout all areas of the world. They range in size from very small to very large, with the biggest being the South American Longhorn Beetle. Children enjoy learning about the insects around them, and you can develop a wide range of language arts activities for your classroom centered on this theme.
  1. Insect Acrostic

    • Create an acrostic poem using the word "insect." Instruct students to write the word horizontally on a sheet of construction paper. They should choose a word or short phrase that describes insects to write under each letter. The word or short phrase should begin with that corresponding letter. For example, a student might choose to write, "interesting" under the letter "i" in insect. For younger children, record their responses rather than asking them to write on their own.

    Insect's Point-of -View

    • Ask students to write a story from the point of view of an insect. Instruct students about the differences between the first-, second- and third-person point-of-view. Have them write and illustrate a short story about what life is like as an insect. For younger children, allow them to tell the story to you rather than write it. For older students, increase the length of the story and ask them to include more details about the setting and characters. Combine all stories and create a classroom book to place in your library.

    Insect Haiku

    • Have students write a haiku about insects to hang in your classroom. This type of poetry has a total of 17 syllables and is often about a nature theme, making it ideal for the subject of insects. Show students a few examples of haikus and then give them a sheet of construction paper for their poem. Ask them to illustrate the haikus with paints or watercolors and place them around your room for decoration.

    Insect Vocabulary

    • Teach students basic facts about insects and ask them to construct their own insect vocabulary list. You can gain this information through books in your school's library. Students should choose words from your lesson that interest them, and ideally, choose at least one or two that they do not know. Have them use the dictionary to look up the words and write definitions. Combine the students' lists and create a dictionary for reference during further lessons on insects.
