Cut a selection of letters out of colorful card stock or construction paper. Place these letters in a plastic container and gather children around in a circle. Pass the container around from child to child and have each child choose a letter. Ask the children the name of the letter they choose, say the sound that letter makes and think of a word that begins with the chosen letter.
Provide children with pens, pencils and crayons and ask them to trace the letters that you previously made with card stock or construction paper. Focus on explaining the shapes of the letters. Also focus on sounding out the letters with the children and teaching them how to properly hold and use writing tools.
Gather students together and ask them to make presentations in front of one another. Ask each child to talk about something they are proud of. The goal of the project is to get the students talking. Asking them to talk about something they enjoy or are proud of will encourage participation. Guide them through the exercise and help them with pronunciation and understanding. Encourage them to ask questions of one another.
Gather children together in a circle and have a book ready to read. Use a book with illustrations and ask the students to verbally express what the illustration is. Encourage children to tell you about the story in their own words. As you read the story, point out the words by pointing them out and slowing speaking them out loud.
