Use crafts to enhance the reading of the book, "Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight?" Make a reindeer craft to go along with the story. Use three craft sticks to create a reindeer's face. Glue two Popsicle sticks to form a "V" shape. Close the "V" by gluing a third stick to the top, slightly below the tops of the "V" so that the ends stick up like antlers. Paint the reindeer brown and add two googly eyes and a red pompom nose. Add a ribbon to hang. Make a candy sleigh after reading "Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight?" Wrap a rectangular chocolate bar in red wrapping paper. Glue two candy canes to the bottom of the candy bar with the hooks facing up to resemble a sleigh. Glue small candy bars to the sleigh to represent gifts.
Use games to enhance the reading of "Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight?" The book mentions many animals as possible sleigh guides. Play a game of animal charades. Write several types of animals on pieces of paper and put them into a bowl. Let students pull an animal type out of the bowl and attempt to act out the animal while other players guess what animal the student is trying to be.
Another game to supplement the book is a game called, "Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight?" Have children sit in a circle. Blindfold one child who will be "Santa." Give another child a sleigh sticker or small model sleigh. The leader says, "Who will guide your sleigh tonight?" and Santa has three guesses as to who is holding the sleigh.
Engage children in imaginative play based on the book. Make Santa, reindeer and other animal masks out of paper plates. Have children act out the story while wearing the masks. Then gather small toys that represent the characters in the story, including Santa, reindeers and other animals. Have children reenact the story with the small toys.
There are many activities that can be used to supplement the story "Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight?" Plan a trip to a farm or zoo and ask children to choose their favorite animal and draw a picture of that animal pulling Santa's sleigh. Ask them why the animal would or would not be a good choice to pull the sleigh. Have children make animal ear headbands to act out the story. For instance, create reindeer antler headbands. Make a headband out of paper by cutting strips of paper and gluing them together to fit the head. Cut antlers out of brown construction paper and glue them to the headband.
