Elementary Lessons on Adjectives

In elementary school students begin to develop their use of language and to start to be more adventurous in the vocabulary they use in their writing. They begin to explore the use of adjectives. There are many ways a teacher can help an elementary student to increase his knowledge and use of adjectives.
  1. Adjective Challenge

    • When a student comes across an interesting adjective, display that word prominently in the classroom. This can be done simply by writing words on a sticky note and stick it to the wall. Encourage students to contribute to the display by adding adventurous adjectives they discover when reading, writing, watching television or listening to music. Create a challenge by awarding a small prize or certificate to the student who contributes the most words to the display.

    Use Your Senses

    • It is important for students to describe not just what they see when they are writing, but to use all five senses. At the beginning of the lesson explain the idea of using the five senses, then take students outside and have them be quiet for a few minutes making notes on what they can see, hear, taste, touch and smell. Back inside, spend some time brainstorming as a class, in pairs and in small groups, ideas for adjectives to describe further the notes they have made. These ideas can then be used in the development of a piece of descriptive writing.

    What's in the Bag?

    • Place a variety of different objects into a bag ensuring they cannot be seen. Students take turns to put an object in the bag and try to describe it to classmates by using adjectives. The rest of the class must try and guess what the object is. Add any new and unusual adjectives used to describe the objects to your adjective display. Students then write independently, creating a description of an object of their choice from the bag. Put the objects where everyone can see them for this part of the lesson so students may also use adjectives to describe the objects' appearance.

    Who am I?

    • Develop your students' knowledge and use of adjectives through having them describe a character. Share a story several times with your class over the course of a week until they are familiar with the characters. At the beginning of the lesson, share the story once more and talk about the characters. Write the names of the characters of strips of paper. Then separate your class into pairs. Give each student a slip of paper and explain they must keep the character they have been given a secret. Students then go away in their pairs and take turns to describe their character using adjectives related to the characters' appearance and personality. Their partner must guess who the character is. Students can then go on to draw their character, writing the adjectives they have used around their picture. Use these pictures as a display in your classroom.
