Topics for Four Square Writing for Fourth & Fifth Grades

The Four Square writing method teaches children how to organize their thoughts before writing a paragraph or essay. The concept, developed by Judith and Evan Gould, involves folding a piece of paper into four equal sections and then writing an idea in each box. Pupils then add details to each idea to create sentences. Fourth- and fifth-grade pupils can practice writing using the Four Square method by writing about topics that are familiar to them.
  1. Favorite Birthday

    • Ask pupils to think about their favorite birthday memory. Give each time to recall this special day -- the celebration, cake, presents, people present for the celebration or maybe a special activity from this particular birthday. Have pupils think of four things associated with this birthday that made it special. Each pupil should then fill each box with an idea and describe that idea in detail. For example, if one box is about receiving a puppy as a present, the pupil can fill in details about the puppy's name, hair color and what it meant to receive a puppy as a gift.

    Fun Place

    • Every child can think of a fun place to which she has been. Have pupils think of one place where they had a lot of fun. This place is the topic of the essay or paragraph. Each pupil should describe the place in detail and explain why this location is so special. If pupils are stumped for ideas, ask them to think about the people who visit this place or a special memory they have.

    School

    • All fourth- and fifth-graders can write about school. Make this the topic for your next Four Square writing assignment. Pupils can write about the first day of school, friends, a favorite teacher or subject, the best part of the day and why, a favorite activity, homework or their transportation to and from school. Topics about school and the school day are endless.

    Book

    • Books can serve as inspiration for a writing topic. All elementary pupils have read a book or listened to a story they've liked. Have pupils write about their favorite book. Pupils can write about the characters in the story, a favorite character, lessons learned, why they liked this book, when they read it, why they read it or who read it to them.
