How to Teach a Child Diagonals

A diagonal is any line that has a slanting or oblique direction. In mathematical terms, a diagonal joins two nonadjacent verticals. You must teach children to draw straight lines, circles and diagonals prior to teaching them to write. This understanding will help students with their handwriting as well as with the process of learning geometrical shapes.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a piece of paper on a flat surface.

    • 2

Draw two parallel, vertical lines in pencil on the paper.

    • 3

Draw two parallel, horizontal lines that connect the vertical lines. The resulting shape will be a square.

    • 4

Instruct the student to find the center of the square by drawing an x through it using a ruler. These lines are diagonal.

    • 5

Explain to students that a sloping line is referred to as a diagonal.
