Daruma-san ga koronda is similar to the American game "Red light, Green light." One child is selected to be the "oni" or "it." Other players stand behind the start line. The oni calls for children to take the first step toward him and then chants the spell "daruma-san ga koronda" with his eyes closed. Children move closer to the oni as he repeats the spell. At random times throughout the game, the oni turns around and looks at the other players. If he catches a child moving, that child must hold his hand. Children attempt to tap the oni on the back without getting caught moving. When the oni calls "tomare" or "stop," all players freeze and he turns around. If he is able to tag a person without taking more than two steps, that player becomes the new oni.
Fuku Warai is a game similar to Pin the Tail on the Donkey in which players attempt to correctly place the parts of the face in the correct position. Players are blindfolded and given a part of the face to tape on a blank head while other players shout instructions. Each player has a chance to place each body part on the face. Children will enjoy the humorous faces this game creates.
In the game Kagome Kagome, a child sits on a chair in the middle of the floor and is blindfolded. The other children form a circle around him and join hands. Music is played or the children sing a song while walking in a circle around the child in the middle. When the music stops or the song ends, the child in the middle must guess who is standing behind him. If he is correct, that child becomes the new person in the middle. If he is incorrect, the music starts again and continues until the child guesses correctly.
Marbles is a common game that boys play in Japan. During class, reward students with marbles for correct answers or good deeds and allow them to play a game using those marbles at the end of the day. Marbles requires the creation of a circle 10 feet across with masking tape or chalk, then placing 13 marbles in a cross shape in the middle of the circle. Players take turns shooting marbles by flicking them from outside the circle. Marbles knocked out of the circle earn points. The player with the most points when all the marbles are knocked out of the circle wins the game.
