Auricle Audiometer Operating Instructions

Children’s vision and hearing are tested in grade school about every two years dependent on each state's guidelines. Auricle manufactures audiometers to test the hearing of children. Children who do not hear well may develop slower in speech and cognitive learning abilities. A child with a hearing deficiency may need special classes, seating closer to the teacher or even a hearing aid to do well in school. An audiometer test takes only a few minutes to perform and indicates if a child has sufficient hearing to pass the test.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the Auricle audiometer power cord into an electrical outlet. Turn the power button on and let the audiometer warm up for about 10 minutes.

    • 2

Sit a child in a chair of appropriate size so they are comfortable, facing away from the audiometer where they cannot see it. Remove glasses, large earrings and any other obstacles that will not allow the earphones to sit tightly against her ears. Place long hair behind her ears. Place the earphones on the child’s ears and adjust them up or down to cover each ear fully.

    • 3

Give a child clear instructions to hold her right hand up when she hears a tone in the right ear of the earphones and the left hand when she hears a tone in the left side.

    • 4

Set the audiometer for 20dB by adjusting the switch to this location. Turn the dial to 1,000 Hz. Activate the left and right ears by pushing both buttons simultaneously. Release the buttons and activate the left and right ears separately. Repeat this step on the 2,000 and 4,000 Hz settings.

    • 5

Pass a child on her hearing screening if she identifies 20dB at any frequency between 1,000 and 4,000 Hz.

    • 6

Repeat the test if a student did not hear any tones.
