Emergency Procedures for Security Incidents in Schools

General Guidelines

* All staff and students should be familiar with the school's emergency procedures.

* The school should have a designated Emergency Operations Center (EOC) where all emergency response activities will be coordinated.

* The EOC should be staffed with trained personnel, including the school principal, emergency manager, and other key staff members.

* The school should have a clear and concise communication plan to inform staff and students about emergency situations.

* The school should conduct regular drills to ensure that staff and students are prepared to respond to emergencies.

Specific Procedures for Different Types of Security Incidents

* Active shooter:

* If you hear gunshots, immediately take cover and stay down.

* If possible, lock the door and turn off the lights.

* Call 911 and provide the dispatcher with the following information:

* The location of the shooting

* The number of shooters

* The type of weapon being used

* Any other relevant information

* Stay in cover until law enforcement arrives.

* Bomb threat:

* If you receive a bomb threat, immediately notify the school principal or emergency manager.

* The school will be evacuated and law enforcement will be called.

* Do not attempt to investigate the bomb threat yourself.

* Fire:

* If you see a fire, immediately pull the nearest fire alarm.

* Evacuate the building in a calm and orderly manner.

* Follow the evacuation instructions provided by the fire department.

* Do not re-enter the building until it has been declared safe by the fire department.

* Medical emergency:

* If you see someone who is injured or ill, immediately call 911.

* Provide the dispatcher with the following information:

* The location of the injured or ill person

* The nature of the injury or illness

* Any other relevant information

* Stay with the injured or ill person until medical help arrives.

Post-Incident Procedures

* After an emergency incident, the school will conduct a debriefing to discuss what happened and what went well.

* The school will also provide counseling and other support services to students and staff who were affected by the incident.

* The school will make any necessary changes to its emergency procedures to prevent future incidents from happening.
