How to Learn English Using a Nintendo DS

Learning English can be a daunting task. The handheld DS Nintendo has increased self-confidence and motivation with games that teach pronunciation, build vocabulary and improve spelling. The non-English speaker, young and old, might study in a DS classroom with other students or independently. The DS games make the learning relevant and bridge home and school.

Study in a DS classroom, where each student has a DS that is connected to the teacher's computer. Students take multiple choice tests in vocabulary or spelling and complete exercises.

    • 2

Study independently. Games such as My English Coach and Word Coach encourage self-study while increasing vocabulary and pronunciation. Both games have built in dictionaries with up to 17,000 English words.

    • 3

Increase word recognition and brain power. The game called Brain Age claims to increase your mental agility. Timing yourself with either the word scramble or word blend game increases speed and knowledge of vocabulary and spelling.

Play multiplayer games. Competition not only increases speed and mastery of the English language, it increases your motivation to learn. Word Coach, for example, has five multiplayer games that are wireless and link Wii to the DS system.
