Read through the text again after your initial reading and write down your thoughts and ideas. Try to avoid summarizing the text, but focus on your thoughts about what the text is saying. Look through an online database to find some other critiques to read besides just the one you are responding to.
Consider who the text was written for and what message the author was trying to portray through the text. Ask yourself whether the author accomplished the purpose of the text. Write down how you felt when reading the text and compare it to what the author is trying to accomplish.
Read throught the critic's analysis of the text again. Determine whether or not you agree with the critic's point of view about the text. Create a clear thesis statement that explains your interpretation of the text and how it agrees or disagrees with the critic's interpretation.
Go through your notes and the text again to find evidence to support your claims. Mark these places in the book and in your notes.
