How to Write a Critical Analysis of a Literary Work

A critical analysis of a literary work involves working to gain further understanding of the subject matter you are writing about. Literature includes such things as poetry, works of fiction, short stories and plays, so the type of analysis you do will vary depending on what you are writing about. There are certain parts of writing an analysis that remain the same regardless of the subject, as long as you unveil a deeper meaning of the work in your criticism.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the main thesis idea for your critical analysis. This is the central idea that you will focus on throughout the paper. The thesis idea is the part of the analysis in which you are trying to expand awareness for the readers of your paper. For example, a thesis could be a main theme or symbolism you found intriguing while reading the literary work.

    • 2

Look through the literary work to find evidence that supports your thesis idea. If you chose to focus on religious symbolism in the book, look for examples that you can use to support your idea. Write these down.

    • 3

Write the introduction, which is the first few paragraphs of your paper. Each paragraph should have at least three to five sentences. The introduction should tell the reader your thesis idea as well as briefly summarize the plot or main idea of the literary work. Act as if the reader has already read the piece, but remind them what you are talking about with a brief summary.

    • 4

Present the evidence that supports your thesis statement in the next section of the paper, also known as the body. This section should be at least three paragraphs but may be more depending on the length requirements for the paper set by your professor. Use summary, direct quotations and details to support the main thesis idea that you presented in the introduction. Use the format that your professor chooses for you such as MLA or Chicago style. Manuals are available for both styles to show you the correct way to format the paper.

    • 5

Finish the paper with a conclusion paragraph. This should tie up any loose ends and provide your final thoughts on the subject matter. Do not introduce new topics in this section.

    • 6

Write a list of your references if you used outside research for the paper. Format the references in the style chosen by your professor for the paper.
