Problems With Gearboxes in Toyota Hiluxes

The Toyota Hilux is a 4-by-4 pickup truck which ships with either a 2.5- or 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine. The engine in the Hilux is designed to generate maximum torque (343Nm for the 2.5 and 360Nm for the 3.0). This massive amount of torque can eventually trigger problems in the gearbox.
  1. Slipping

    • Gear slipping occurs when the gear is selected but the clutch remains partially engaged, resulting in diminished power capacity being transmitted to the driven wheels. This is typically a symptom of a failing clutch in a manual transmission vehicle, necessitating immediate repair.

    Grinding

    • Grinding gears on the Hilux occurs mainly as a result of user error -- attempting to change gears before the clutch is fully depressed or releasing the clutch before the car is completely in gear. Over time, this can wear down the gear in the gearbox, necessitating repairs.

    Stuck Gears

    • Sticking gears on the Hilux can occur when attempting to place the car into reverse or first gear after leaving it in position overnight. To avoid this issue, shift into a different gear without releasing the clutch before selecting the desired gear.
