Let your little one string letters together on a large canvas with alphabet fridge magnets. Show her how to spell the word "dog" by placing the magnets in the correct order. Mix up the magnets and ask her to spell the word "dog." Be encouraging as she looks for the correct letters.
Make words using alphabet blocks. Place the letters side by side to spell the word "cat." Once she understands how to spell the word "cat" by placing the letters side by side and challenge her to stack the blocks to make the word "cat." Start with the letter "c" on the bottom, then place an "a" in the middle and the "t" on top. Mastery for spelling with stacked blocks takes longer than spelling side by side.
Giver her some paper and chunky crayons to practice writing her letters. Letter formation is difficult at this age, but you can guide her hand as she practices the line formations.
Get a little messy and put some whipped cream on a large, flat surface, such as the table. Let her use her fingers to trace letters in the whipped cream. She will be a sticky mess after her spelling lesson but she will see her words appear on the table as she makes them.
Use alphabet crackers or cereal and encourage your toddler to make words with letters she finds. Ask her to look for the letter "b." After she finds the letter "b" ask her to find the letter "a" and then the letter "t." Put the letters together to spell the word "bat." Show her the letter order for spelling the word "bat." Let her eat her tasty creations.
Offer plenty of praise and encouragement. You need to show your toddler how to spell each word several times before she fully understands what she is spelling and why. Sound out the letters when you are helping her spell a word.
