Easy Chemistry Project Ideas

Chemistry projects do not have to be complicated, and you can actually create many simple chemistry projects at home. Chemistry projects can teach inquisitive children about science in fun and interesting ways. With a small number of ingredients and an inquisitive child or two, you can re-create a number of popular child-friendly chemistry projects in the comfort of your own home.
  1. Slime

    • Create slime at home using a simple collection of ingredients. Most slime recipes are simple enough that you can make them from household ingredients that you already have. Combine equal parts of white glue and water in one container, and equal parts of borax and water in another container. Add food coloring if you desire. Slowly stir the two mixtures together in a glass container. Scoop the slime into your hands and knead it gently until it dries. As you handle it, it will become firm and dry. When you stop handling it, the slime will return to a soft and gooey state. Store the slime in the fridge in a sealed plastic bag when not in use to prevent mold.

    Crystal Spikes

    • To create spikes in the sun, you need a cake or pie pan, Epsom salt, warm water, scissors and black construction paper. Evaporation of the water is necessary for the crystals to form, so choose a sunny day for this project. Cut a piece of paper to fit in the bottom of the pie pan. Combine a tablespoon of Epsom salt with a quarter cup of water and stir until the salt has completely dissolved. Place the construction paper in the bottom of the pan and pour the saltwater solution in the pan. Leave the pan in a sunny place and watch the crystals grow over time as the water dissolves. Look at the crystals under a magnifying glass for even more fun.

    Volcano Eruption

    • To create a baking soda volcano you need a baking dish, baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, dishwashing soap, plastic soda bottle, warm water, cooking oil, flour and salt. This is an average-difficulty project. Create the volcano by mixing 2 cups of water to 4 tbsp. oil, 2 cups salt and 6 cups flour. Mold the dough around the empty soda bottle to create the shape of a volcano and allow it to dry completely before you continue. Fill the bottle up with warm water and red food coloring, and then add six drops of washing detergent and 2 tbsp. of baking soda. The bottle should be nearly full, but not completely. Finally, slowly add vinegar to the mixture in the bottle and the eruption will begin!
