Making a 3D painting can teach elementary art students that they can use different materials in combination with acrylic paint to create a unique multimedia creation. Begin by painting a canvas with a solid color. Press other materials onto the canvas, such as tissue paper, cloth, lace, stones, cardboard tubes or cotton balls. Cover the materials with more paint to ensure the materials stay on the canvas and to blend in to the background. Allow the painting to dry completely before displaying it.
Making clay masks is a great way to teach elementary art students about turning a two-dimensional material into a three-dimensional creation. Start by kneading 1 pound of earthen clay for around five minutes to remove the air bubbles. Use a rolling pin to roll the clay into a flay slab. Use a clay knife to cut out an oval roughly the size of a human head. Crumple up paper towels, and drape the shape over them to form the shape into a face. Use the clay knife to cut out eye holes, a mouth hole and a nose hole. Use fingers to mold the desired shape. Allow the mask to air dry, then paint it with ceramics glaze. Allow the glaze to dry completely. Fire the mask in a kiln.
When making a rolled paper picture, elementary students can create a beautiful picture out of strips of paper and glue. Cut different colors of paper into 1/2-inch wide by 3-inch long strips. Use fingers to roll a strip into a tight curl. Glue the curl of paper onto a sheet of paper. Continue to glue curled strips to the paper until you have created an image, such as a tree, a piece of fruit or an animal.
