Begin each spelling session by giving the student a five-minute spelling test where word retention and a review of previous words are tested. The student will also preview new words at this time.
Spend the next five minutes with your child saying new spelling words. Your child will spell the words back to you. If a word is not successfully spelled, your child traces the correctly spelled word in his or her record book. According to Homeschool-Curriculum, tracing the word helps the child visualize and remember the correct spelling.
Use the remaining five minutes to study spelling words. Activity task cards can be utilized for this remaining time. The cards are color coded based on the student's level of ability. The five activities included in these cards are skill builders, drill activities, writing prompters, homonyms, and dictionary skill builders.
