Science Projects on Which Breads Mold Faster

Science experiments give students the opportunity to write a hypothesis, plan a method for testing that hypothesis, manipulate variables and witness and evaluate the outcome. Projects that evaluate the rates at which different kinds of bread grow mold give aspiring scientists an opportunity to conduct an experiment with inexpensive and easy-to-find materials. Bread mold experiments also produce visual results that can be described, drawn and photographed--all important parts of communicating results.
  1. Bread in a Bag

    • Place slices of three different kinds of bread--such as whole grain, rye and French--of equal weight into three separate resealable plastic bags. Set them flat on a tray beside each other in a place where each slice will have equal shade or sunlight. Monitor the amount of time that passes until one of them shows evidence of mold growth. Document the continued appearance of mold.

    Wet and Dry

    • Place six pieces of three different kinds of bread of equal weight into six separate resealable plastic bags. Add one tablespoon of water to one set of bread slices and leave the other set to dry. Place them together in one area and monitor how long it takes until one set or one slice of bread begins to show signs of mold growth. This experiment evaluates how different kinds of bread grow mold and how moisture affects the rate of mold growth.

    Location

    • Place four slices of one kind of bread, each of equal weight, in separate resealable plastic bags. Place them in four different locations. (For example, put one in a place that receives a lot of direct sunlight, another in a dark place such as a closet or inside a cabinet, another in the refrigerator and another on top of the refrigerator, where it's warm). Evaluate the rate at which mold grows in different settings.

    Dry Variables

    • Place five pieces of bread, each of equal weight, in plastic containers. Add a teaspoon of a different dry substance to each one. Examples of dry substances are sand, lint, a dry spice, detergent, dog fur and talcum powder. Place one more slice of bread in a plastic container and do nothing to it. You will use this one as a constant. Monitor the amount of time it takes for mold to grow in each container.
