You will need several dentures for this experiment. Ask your dentist if he can supply you with dentures that, obviously, aren’t being used anymore. Soak the dentures separately in a mixture of boiled tobacco juice and coffee. Let them sit overnight. In the morning, apply different types of tooth whiteners to the dentures. You can use a toothbrush to apply the whiteners or apply with your fingers. Whiteners utilize an oxidizing process to whiten teeth; the key ingredient in whiteners is generally hydrogen peroxide. Do not clean one set so you can compare it to the whitened set as part of the experiment. Compare the effectiveness of gel whiteners to whitening toothpaste and see which whitens the most. Track which denture has been soaked in which solution and for how long and compare the results. Which is whiter? After making this determination you can advise that one whitening solution is better than the other.
Do certain denture cleaners (not toothpaste) clean better than others? This is your premise. Soak a set of dentures in grapefruit juice over night. The next day, put the dentures in a cup filled with the product of your choice, such as Polident or Efferdent Plus Denture Cleaner. Leave the dentures in the solution for a specified period of time. Now repeat the process on another pair of dentures using a different solution and allow it to set in the solution for the same amount of time as the first set of dentures. Compare the results. The better the cleansing solution the less likely dentures are going to become discolored over time.
Write down the ingredients of specific denture cleaners or whitening products. When you determine which is the better product determine if the less effective product contained the same ingredients. If not determine which ingredient was missing.
Note in your experiment the condition of the dentures that are being used because this is an important variable. If there is a lot of surface damage to the dentures, which has resulted in irregularities, including pits and grooves, that will lessen the efficiency of cleaning products.
Pick various culprits, such as coffee or juice or anything that is likely to stain dentures during the normal course of the day when eating and drinking. See which stains are removed the easiest and which are the most stubborn and difficult to remove.
