How to Teach Art to Toddlers

If you are responsible for teaching a group of toddlers about art, then you know how difficult it can be to keep the preschoolers entertained while successfully educating them at the same time. However, since art is a highly creative subject, you can provide the toddlers with hands-on projects that are easy to complete and are created with nontoxic, basic materials that can be found at any grocery store or supermarket.

  1. Teaching Preschool Sculpture

    • 1

Pour 2 cups of flour into a large bowl.

    • 2

Mix in 2 cups of water and 1 cup of salt.

    • 3

Add 10 drops of a single color of food coloring into the dough, and mix the dough well to incorporate the coloring into the dough thoroughly.

    • 4

Give each child a piece of the dough to create a free-form sculpture.

    Teaching Preschool Painting

    • 5

Scoop vanilla pudding into six different bowls, 1 cup of pudding each.

    • 6

Add five drops of food coloring into each bowl, making one bowl blue, one bowl red, one bowl orange, one bowl green, one bowl purple and one bowl yellow.

    • 7

Stir each bowl well with a spoon to incorporate the food coloring into the pudding completely.

    • 8

Lay a sheet of craft paper in front of the toddlers, and allow them to finger paint using the edible paints.

    Teaching Preschool Pattern Making

    • 9

Cut out circles from red construction paper.

    • 10

Give each child one of the red circles and a sheet of black dot stickers.

    • 11

Instruct the children to place the dots onto the red circles to create a lady bug. Each child will create a different pattern with the dots and will benefit from the fine motor skills required to place the dots onto the paper.
