How to Start a Homeschool Sports Program

If you can't locate a homeschool sporting program for your child to join, create your own. Competition is healthy for young players and playing sports helps children to develop physically, emotionally and gives them self-esteem. The following steps will help you start your own homeschool sports program.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what sport you would like to sponsor. The most popular homeschool sports program is basketball, but you can also choose baseball, football, tennis, track, golf, volleyball and even bowling.

    • 2

Consider whether you would like your team to compete against other teams or to just play for fun. You may have to start out as a recreational team until you get going.

    • 3

Find a place to practice and play your games. Try renting church gyms, Christian school gyms, public school or charter school gyms or community centers.

    • 4

Build the team by finding kids interested in joining the sporting program. Call your local homeschooling organizations to see if you can put announcements in their newsletters or on their website, put an announcement in church bulletins and let other families that you know who are homeschooling about your team and program.

    • 5

Collect a fee from each player to cover expenses incurred from renting facilities, buying equipment and purchasing uniforms.

    • 6

Get the equipment you'll need for your team. If you decide to get uniforms, you may qualify for a discount at some stores if you belong to a homeschool association. Call the association if you are a member to see if they regularly work with someone and receive a better price.

    • 7

Appoint a coach to run the team or do it yourself. Get advice from other coaches if you are new at coaching and purchase a sporting instructional book or video to help you.

    • 8

Locate other homeschool teams or private schools and check to see if you can play competitively against them. Even if you only play against one or two teams, once you get going it will eventually catch on and other teams will want to join.
