How to Home School Your Child in Texas

Home schooling is the act of educating your child at home, rather than sending him to a public or private school. Reasons for home schooling vary greatly amongst parents, but some choose to home educate so that the child will receive more one-on-one time or have a flexible schedule. In Texas, state law states that children must attend school once they turn 6 years old until they are 17 years old. If a child was previously enrolled in Kindergarten and is not yet six, he must continue being schooled without a break in his education.

Instructions

If you are removing your children mid-year, write a letter to your local principal to let him know your children will no longer be attending the school. The Texas Home School Coalition notes that this is not legally required, but will prevent a visit from a truancy officer.

Use a written curriculum. The State of Texas does require that home schools use a written curriculum, although the law does not dictate that this curriculum must be purchased. You can create your own curriculum as long as it is physically written down.

    • 3

Teach math, reading, spelling, grammar and good citizenship. Texas requires that all home schooled children be educated in these subjects, but does not require that the children submit to standardized testing.

Join a home school group. Home school support groups are designed as a way to bring parents together for social and emotional support, teach group classes together, and offer sports and activities for the children.
