Children in Minnesota between ages seven and 16 must attend school. If your child begins attending Kindergarten or first grade before he is seven, there must be no break in his education. This means that if you decide to pull him from a public or private school, you must begin his homeschooling immediately.
Your child's curriculum must include, but is not limited to, the following subjects: reading, literature, writing, math, science, fine arts, history, geography, government, health and physical education. The curriculum must be printed and taught in English, although you may include foreign language instruction.
As a homeschool parent, you must meet certain requirements before beginning your child's home education. Home educators must complete a competency examination, have a bachelor's degree in any subject, be supervised directly by a licensed teacher, hold a Minnesota state teaching license in any grades and subjects taught or submit your child to assessment testing. You only need to meet one of the requirements in order to homeschool.
You must notify your local school superintendent each year that you intend to homeschool your child. Contact the superintendent by October 1st and include each homeschooled child's name, birthday and address. You must also inform the superintendent of your instructor qualifications and provide a planned instructional calendar, dictating what you plan on teaching your children. If you do not have a teaching license or college degree and are homeschooling your child through yearly assessments, you must also provide your child's test scores in the notification letter.
