The Master's Academy program meets one day a week and was created for home schooled children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Children are introduced to the arts and art history through a six-year cycle, which begins with Ancient Civilizations and ends with the Modern period. Students don't need to start at the beginning of the cycle because the units are self-contained.
This homeschool support group entitles member families to register for as many field trips as they like at the member rate and participate in one free hike per month with their hiking club. Membership is not required to take part in their excursions, however. Excursion activities include attending performances, nutrition and cooking class and meeting with other homeschoolers from around the state.
Greater Griffin Christian Home Educators is a large and active homeschool support group that has operated since 1986. They offer educational field trips and classes; social events including skating, holiday parties and teen events; and have reading incentive book clubs such as Book-it, Scholastic and Six Flags. Other on-going programs include soccer, baseball, Civil Air Patrol, American Girl's History Club, mom's night out and art classes. Members use a password-protected website and attend support group meetings for families from the following counties: Fayette, Henry, Spalding, Lamar, Pike, Upson and Butts.
The Central Savannah River Area Home Education Association is located in Augusta and has a membership of about 400 families. It offers services such as a large library, a cap and gown graduation ceremony with diplomas for graduating seniors, an annual used-book and curriculum sale, opportunities to compete in educational contests like the National Spelling Bee and science fairs, and support from experienced homeschoolers. Members can get educator's discounts at local stores.
This group meets every Tuesday during the year and has a planning meeting in the summer to develop the schedule of classes for the year. Parents suggest classes and volunteer to teach or assist. There is a 10-week fall session, a 12-week winter session. Classes are divided by age-level into three 40-minute class periods. Students choose classes for two periods, and the third is PE. Field trips are offered to places like the Georgia Aquarium.
Georgia Virtual School is a fully accredited program of the Georgia Department of Education's Office of Technology Services. It offers high school level courses, including college prep level and Advanced Placement courses. A number of state-funded seats are available to home school students, who may take one virtual course in the fall and one in the spring. Additional classes cost $300 per half-unit.
