Reader Rabbit Activities

Home-schooling parents looking for computer software that will assist them in their work with introducing reading and math concepts to early learners will find the numerous editions of the Reader Rabbit series to be of service. Guided by animated characters, most notably Reader Rabbit himself, kids as young as 9 months can get exposure to math and reading concepts by participating in adventure games and activities delivered through an engaging and satisfying story concept.
  1. Activities for Preschoolers

    • It may seem that babies and toddlers are too young for learning computer games, but the Reader Rabbit series offers simple, beginning activities for these youngest learners. Kids up to ages 2 and 3 follow along in games of identifying animals, colors and shapes, feelings/emotions, sounds and music, and letters and numbers. Young kids also have the opportunity to participate in sing-alongs and dancing activities. Some of the individual game titles included for this age range are: "Hide and Seek Animals," "Faces and Feelings," "My Storybook," "Peek-a-Boo Bubbles," "Shape Slide" and "Musical Drawers."

    Activities for Kindergartners

    • As with all the Reader Rabbit programs, the activities for kindergartners are organized around a theme. This product asks kids to work with Reader Rabbit to "collect supplies for the big campfire party at Camp Happy Tales." Similar to others in the series, the program includes activities covering a variety of subject matter appropriate for ages 4 to 6. Kids are asked to assist the animated characters in completing useful tasks like cleaning up the lake and organizing the pantry. Along the way, kids practice simple math calculations and beginning work in reading. By following directions and working along with the animated animal guides, kids also sharpen their ability to reason, think through the steps needed to solve problems and incorporate work with telling time and understanding the calendar.

    Phonics Activities for First-Graders

    • This program gives students a chance to practice their understanding of phonics as a beginning-to-read activity through an adventure that involves collecting and sorting sounds and words in order to progress through the game's levels. Based in and around "Wordville, the hometown of Reader Rabbit and Sam the Lion," kids get practice with matching words with their proper word families and spelling and creating their own words. The game in its entirety can be experienced in "Adventure Mode," and kids traveling through the game in this mode are accompanied through each activity by one of the game's animated characters.

    Activities for Second-Graders

    • This program, designed specifically to target learners in the second grade, offers kids the opportunity to interact with established game formats, but also to create their own works of art, music and calendars. They will expand their grammar and writing skills with practice using correct punctuation, capital letters and building sentences and compound words. Math activities offered include adding, subtracting, counting by multiples, fraction recognition and practice telling time. As with all the programs, this Reader Rabbit edition offers an adventure that guides kids through the activity with a story line format. Here, kids embark on a "cheesy voyage," encountering activities like: "Cheese Brick Spelling, Fondue Falls Vocabulary, Cheese Mine Number Patterns (and) Cheddar Cheese Equations."
