Standards of Learning for Home Schoolers in Virginia

Parents choose to home school their children for a variety of reasons, including religious convictions and children who do not do well in a classroom setting. To ensure that home-schooled children meet at least the minimum standards of education, Virginia provides standards of learning for each core subject at each grade level .
  1. English

    • By the time a home-schooled student completes the equivalent of twelfth grade, he should be able to demonstrate abilities in oral language, reading analysis, writing and research. They should be able to make and evaluate a 5- to 10-minute oral presentation, with a logical argument, visual aids, using supportive details and grammatically correct language. The student must be able to read, understand and critique the structure and content of poetry, drama, and British literature; and write, revise and proofread informational, creative and research papers.

    Math

    • The standards of learning for high school level math courses include requirements from Algebra I through Advanced Placement Calculus. Students are not required to complete all of the outlined courses, but must demonstrate proficiency in Algebra I, at the minimum. The standards of learning for Algebra I include solving the Pythagorean Theorem, multi-step linear equations and using matrices to organize and manipulate data.

    History and Socal Science

    • Virginia's standards of learning for history and social science include courses in civics, American history and geography. These courses are, for the most part, not defined by grade level in the state standards. Check with your local school district for their curriculum requirements.

    Science

    • The junior high and high school science courses described in Virginia's standards of learning range from life science through physics, though students are only required to complete courses up to and including biology. Students completing biology must be able to demonstrate understanding of concepts including the process of genetic inheritance, the cell membrane model and the history of biological concepts.
