Fall Party Ideas for a Christian Preschool

The fall is a time of reaping what was sown earlier in the year. The themes of harvest, plenty and thankfulness that we associate with autumn all lend themselves well to crafts and stories with a Christian theme. Plan party activities that encourage students to reflect on what the Lord has blessed their lives with and their need to praise God for those blessings. Blend these ideas with a basic understanding of the natural processes that occur during the fall season.
  1. Decorations

    • James 1:7 states that every good and perfect thing is a gift from God. Decorate for a fall party at preschool by making a Thankfulness tree. Cut a tree trunk and limbs from brown construction paper. The size of the tree should be determined by the space you intend to display it in; it can be expanded to cover most of a wall, or shrunk down to fit within the confines of a bulletin board. Trace each child's hands on a sheet of construction paper in different fall colors. Cut the hands out; these will form the leaves of the trees. Have the children list two specific things they are thankful for and write them on their hand-leaves. Staple the leaves on the ground around the tree or in the branches of the tree. On the trunk of the tree write the message, "I am thankful for all the Lord has made."

Pin the Tail on the Turkey

    • Before the party, talk about the importance of the harvest. An example of harvesting can be taken from Genesis 8:22. Talk about what harvesting did in biblical times, and then relate that to the Thanksgiving story. Give students several kinds of dried grain. Seed corn, soybeans, brown beans, black beans, peas and other dehydrated grains and legumes can be used. Print out or draw a large turkey body and allow children to color the turkey as they wish. Then glue the grains onto the turkey to give it texture, and create a mosaic-like design. At the party give students at large feather with double-stick tape on the back side. You can cut feathers out of paper or buy real feathers. Have students pin the feather on the turkey, just like you pin the tail on the donkey. Put a blindfold on the child and point him in the right direction. The child who gets the feather closest to the turkey's tail wins.

    Treats

    • Use traditional fall fruits, like apples and pumpkins, to make refreshments for your party. Help children at the party scrape out pumpkins and salt and bake the seeds. Put apples through a juicer to make fresh apple cider. Allow children to bob for apples on a string. Puree and bake the body of the pumpkin to make pumpkin pies for a fall feast.

Nature Walk and Leaf Rubbing Invitations

    • Take the children at the party on a nature walk. Play "I Spy" as you wander, looking for things that remind the students of the Lord and his creations. While you are walking, collect a sampling of fall leaves. Take the leaves back inside and lay three to five leaves under a plain sheet of typing paper. Select leaves according to the child's desires and what will fit well. Have students run different colors of crayons over different leaves to make a rubbing of each leaf. Suggest to students that they use the colors that they observed during your nature walk. In the open space between the leaves write the message, "Fall into the presence of the Lord." If you do this activity in advance of the party, use the rubbings to make party invitation cards for parents and grandparents of the preschool students.
