The garden theme is an excellent way to allow for outdoor learning in a Christian preschool. Children learn about plant life, but there are also activities for other subject areas that fit the theme. Let children plant their own seeds and watch them grow. If they are ready to write, help create science journals for children to record how much their plants have grown. Have the students learn about different types of flowers and make art projects about them. With math, preschoolers count and sort different types of seeds. Research appropriate Bible verses about growing to share with the children.
The farm theme is popular with preschoolers, because most of them love animals. Using a farm theme is an excellent way to teach children about animals, as well as diet. Extend the farm theme for several weeks. Focus week on lessons and activities about farm animals. Make week two about the fruits and vegetables grown on farms, along with ways to cook them. Week three centers on diet and exercise. Research appropriate Bible verses to fit in with the theme, and explain how God created every living thing.
Water themes come in handy during summer camp. Water tables and water activities help teach science concepts, and children love them. Lessons about sinking, floating and density are taught using a water table. Teach children about plants and animals that live underwater, and about water safety. Prepare cutouts of different plants and animals commonly found on the beach for children to sort and make patterns from. Let children play in the water outdoors if the weather is warm. The Bible lessons about the parting of the Red Sea, Noah's Ark and Jesus feeding the multitudes fit in well with this theme.
The around the world theme is popular with teachers because they have numerous cultures to teach children about. This is a good theme to use for longer periods of time. If there are accommodations to prepare food on site, show children how foods from other cultures are made, and the preschoolers can even make snacks themselves, if possible. Sing "Jesus Loves the Little Children" in circle time, and introduce Bible lessons from various parts of the globe as well. Discuss the way children in different parts of the world worship and celebrate holidays.
