How to Use Pictures to Write Essays

Pictures evoke powerful emotions and can tell a story much more effectively than words alone. Whether you're documenting your family trip to Italy or your newborn's first year, using images to chronicle the event can make a lasting impact. Armed with a good camera and a solid grasp of the story you'd like to tell, you can make your story come to life.

Pick a topic. Photo essays are the most powerful when you care about the subject. If you spend a lot of time hiking and traveling in nature, convey your passion in photos. If you are expecting a child, tell the story of your path to parenthood in pictures.

Define your story. Just as you focus your camera lens on a subject, you need to focus your photo essay on the heart of your story. If it's about your hike through the Grand Canyon, focus on the grueling physical demands of the hike or the breathtaking beauty of nature. You can highlight both, but one must be the focus.

Plan your shot list. Each image in your photo essay is like a sentence moving the reader through the story. You need a minimal number of photos, typically 10, to effectively tell your story.

A portrait adds human emotion to your essay.

Take your photos. Make sure to include a lead shot that hooks the viewer; a shot that sets the scene of the story; at least one portrait to capture human emotion; detail photos that zoom in on specific elements (e.g., a ring at a wedding); and a closing or clinching photo. You may also include a gesture photo that shows an interaction between two subjects in the story and a signature photo that captures the key elements of your story.

Put your photos in the order that best tells your story. Use photo software to create a slide show. Rearrange your photos until they logically move the viewer through your story.

Add words to enhance the photo story with meaningful detail. Do not write a caption that simply describes the photo. The words should enlighten the viewer beyond what the photo already communicates.
