How to Make Better Paragraphs

Effective writing not only gets you a better grade in school, it also communicates your ideas to the reader. Clear writing equals clear communication. One key to clear writing lies in the building blocks of any paper: the paragraph. Learning to write better paragraphs is not only about word choice; it is about clarity, unity and focus.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a topic sentence. Consider the topic sentence the same as a thesis in a paper: It should contain the main point of your paragraph. Formulate the topic sentence with the scope of your paragraph in mind; keep the focus of the paragraph narrowed down to one complete topic.

    • 2

Brainstorm ideas for the rest of the paragraph. Write down any and all ideas that might have a place in your paragraph. Evaluate these ideas for clarity and relevance when finished, crossing off any that do not make sense or are not directly related to the topic sentence.

    • 3

Write out your entire paragraph in a first draft. Assess the paragraph, keeping an eye on the unity of the paragraph and the relevance of each sentence to the topic sentence. Rewrite the paragraph to include any changes.

    • 4

Proofread the paragraph. Perform a line edit on each sentence to identify any grammar, punctuation and spelling mistakes. Fix these mistakes and rewrite the paragraph to include the changes.
