Write your paper with consideration of the features of critical writing. Present a fair challenge, complete with evidence from a reliable source, of an opposing view to your position. Present your position from all sides. Acknowledge opposition to your position and explain why it is either fair or misdirected. Acknowledge any limitations to your position. Present a strong case for your position, complete with references from reliable resources.
Revise and rewrite your papers. Revising and rewriting papers is a key to learning to write more critically. In addition to revising your own papers, helping someone else by revising his paper can also help you improve your critical writing skills. As you learn to identify weaknesses in your writing through critical review, you will begin to strengthen those weaknesses and improve your writing skills overall.
Release your attachment to your writing. One of the culprits that hinder critical writing is an inability to be objective about your own writing. An effective way to achieve objectivity is to put time between writing and revising your paper. A one- to two-day break before revising the paper is ideal, but even stepping away for an hour can help you distance yourself from your writing and gain objectivity when critically reviewing it.
Provide evidence for any statements in your paper for which evidence is warranted.
Inspect your paper to make sure you are communicating clearly and efficiently. Proofread for spelling and grammar errors. Grammar checkers and spell checkers are helpful but imprecise; they are no substitute for knowing the rules of grammar and having a solid ability to spell and communicate.
Ask yourself questions that you can answer with a critical review of your writing. What was your objective in writing the paper? Did you achieve your objective? Are there any weak points that you can make stronger to achieve your objective?
Analyze the structure, style, subject, introduction and conclusion of your paper to make sure your writing is clear and concise. Make sure the positions you present in one section of your paper do not contradict positions presented in another section.
