How to Write a Learning Contract Paper

A learning contract is a negotiation between a student and his teacher that describes a shared responsibility for the student's education. It both provides a way for an educator to tailor lessons toward an individual student's needs and abilities, and motivates a student to take initiative for his own education. Elementary school students, doctorate students and all those in between use learning contracts to direct their educations, negotiate assignments based on what needs to be learned and take responsibility for their own lives.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of your goals for the upcoming school year. Optionally, if you are in elementary, middle or even high school, include social and behavioral goals in addition to academic goals. If you are in college or graduate school, consider composing a list of goals that span the length of your whole degree program.

    • 2

Schedule a meeting with an educator. Optionally, ask the educator to come up with some of his own goals for you. Discuss the goals on both lists with the educator, coming up with a list of salient things that can be done to achieve goals. Divide the goals into categories, if necessary: for example, you may wish to separate social goals from academic goals.

    • 3

Draft a final copy of the learning contract. Take into account your goals, your educator's goals and the obvious things that must be done to achieve them. Make sure your goals are challenging, but attainable.

    • 4

Print out two copies of the learning contract. Sign both of them, and have your educator sign both as well. Give one to the educator, and keep one for yourself.
