How to Write an Essay Topic Thesis

A thesis is a statement or theory that you intend to prove throughout your essay. When you are assigned a topic for an essay, you will need a strong thesis in your opening paragraph that guides the points of the rest of the essay. If your assigned subject is specific, finding a strong thesis is easier, but broader subjects will require you to narrow your thesis. Taking the time up front to hone your thesis will make writing the rest of your essay much easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Reword the topic of your essay in the form of a question. For example, if your topic is "Positive effects of color therapy on patients," try to rephrase the topic as "What are the positive effects of color therapy on patients?"

    • 2

Write down some potential answers to your question. This will help to clarify the strongest thesis topic possible. One possible answer might include: "Benefits of color therapy include relief from medical symptoms, increased blood flow and weight loss."

    • 3

Choose one or two of the strongest answers to the question and rewrite them in one or two sentences. An example may be, "Patients who are treated with color therapy can expect relief from symptoms, increased blood flow and even weight loss."

    • 4

Write the rest of your essay in reference to your thesis statement, providing proof of its validity and elaborating on important points.
