How to Write a News Service Press Release

The purpose of a news service press release is to report the news in a very concise manner and in a way that presents the most important information first. The details of the story should follow in descending order of importance. The news service press release has to offer the news to the readers quickly and without them having to read the entire text.

Come up with a catchy headline. The purpose of the headline is to grab the attention of the readers, make them intrigued and interested in the story. The headline should be short and self-explanatory. The sub-headline is the first sentence under the headline, which is written in bold letters. Explain in just that sentence what the story is about.

Offer more information about the news in your release. Write all the most relevant information you want to convey in the first paragraph. If possible, answer these questions: what happened; when, where, why and how it happened; and who was involved. As a rule of thumb, if you would end the press release here, the reader should know everything about the story.

Go into the details. Generally, the news press release should be brief, so don't overdo it with facts. Limit yourself to three or four paragraphs in total. Present some additional information regarding the story, like for example testimonies of witnesses or the background of the story.
