How to Use Technology to Write Rough Drafts

A rough draft is a document that is composed to get the majority of your ideas down in a semi-organized fashion. Fixing grammatical errors and proper sentence structure is not necessary at the rough draft stage, as the document will be edited. Over the past 20 years technology has dramatically changed the act of writing a rough draft. What started out with just a piece of paper and a pen has progressed to the use computers. Instructions

    • 1

Open up a word processing program on your computer. The most common programs used are Microsoft Word, Word Pad or Note Pad.

    • 2

Open a new document. Choose file then scroll to new. This will open a new clean document to start typing your rough draft.

    • 3

Begin typing any ideas you have. The use of technology will allow you to go back and edit any mistakes later, so don't focus on correcting grammar or spelling at this point.

    • 4

Use the cut and paste feature to organize your ideas in different order. Highlight the sentence or sentences you want to move, then right click on the highlight and choose "Cut." Click the cursor where you want to place the sentence, then right click and select "Paste."

    • 5

Correct any misspellings by using the word processor's spell check. Don't rely entirely on this feature, as sometimes words may be spelled correctly but may be the incorrect word or wrong form of the word for the sentence.
