How to Write an Outline for a Short Report

Outlines are an extremely important part of writing a paper, especially a small paper where there is only a limited amount of space to communicate the thoughts that are the most important. Although outlines can be done in a variety of ways, there are some general guidelines that tend to be excellent choices when writing outlines.

Instructions

    • 1

Develop the thesis you will use for your report. The thesis is the main idea of your report and it will fall in the first paragraph. It is important to develop the thesis of your report before you move on to the other sections of your outline so that you can understand what the focus of your paper will be.

    • 2

Divide your report into different sections. Depending on how short your report is, you may need a variety of different sections or you may use just a few. To create an outline that will effectively help you organize your thoughts, you should understand how much room you will have.

    • 3

Use Roman numerals to highlight the main ideas of each of your sections. Roman numerals are used to help you stay organized while also giving your outline a professional look and feel.

    • 4

Formulate sub-points and mark these with numbers or letters, depending on how deep your outline gets. If each of your main sections has three parts, and each of those three parts has three parts, for example, use letters to mark the first main parts and numbers to highlight the second main parts.

    • 5

Write your conclusion in your outline, which should also incorporate the thesis that you developed earlier. It is important that the conclusion be well written and organized so that your audience can get a good feel for what they just read.
