How to Compare & Contrast Renewable & Non-Renewable Resources

Because of the limited nature of nonrenewable resources, scientists are investigating alternative, renewable resources. Renewable resources are defined as a resource that can, within the laws of nature, be maintained. Nonrenewable resources are resources that will eventually run out; they are finite. Nonrenewable resources often have negative environmental impact. However, renewable resources are sometimes more expensive, or are more difficult to access. Comparing and contrasting these resources may help scientists make better decisions.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a line down the middle of your piece of paper. Title one side Renewable and one side Nonrenewable.

    • 2

Research renewable and nonrenewable resources using the internet, scientific books, and news sources.

    • 3

Write what nonrenewable resources you discover, such as coal, under nonrenewable.

    • 4

List every renewable resource you discover in your research. Some renewable resources include wind energy and solar energy.

    • 5

Write the negative and positive traits of nonrenewable resources under nonrenewable. List the positive and and negative traits of renewable resources under renewable.

    • 6

Compare each list by counting how many positive and negative traits each one has. Consider the impacts of each trait, such as pollution, limitation of resource, and cost.
